It’s not every day that the entire technical press goes bonkers over news in the open source world, but that’s what happened last week, when Sun announced that it was buying MySQL. Doubtless, the pleasant roundness of the sum involved - $1 billion – helped, as did the fact that most of that was cash. But leaving aside the sense of satisfaction that events in the free software world should be suddenly thrust centre-stage, Sun’s move does raise a larger question about the fate of all open source start-ups.

Windows Vista SP1 release date is closing in and speculation says that the service pack is be released on February 15. Microsoft has been aggressive in releasing builds to its private testers and they have issued the second build in the last two weeks.

It is expected that Microsoft would soon release this build to the public as what they earlier did with previous release candidates.

We’ll just have to wait a little longer for the service pack and hopefully this bring lot of sale surges for Microsoft.

Windows Vista was shipped with a more tedious anti-piracy features that makes you go the extra step registering and stuff which has finally paid off for Microsoft.

Technology Business Review, Inc has analyzed that Microsoft got an extra $77M from their anti-piracy moves. That is a lot of money for spare change. In an excerpt of the story found here:

The bounce to Microsoft’s bottom line, calculated by Allan Krans, an analyst at Technology Business Review Inc., was $77 million.

“Since the Windows market is so saturated, they’re looking for any niches to increase their revenue line beyond PC growth, and antipiracy is one of those areas,” said Krans. “The opportunity isn’t substantial, but it’s still revenue. If they can tweak an extra $100 million or so a quarter, they’ll take it.”
